The Association

CEENTAA Assoiciação Cultural e Ambiental [Cultural and Environmental Non-profit] aims for the transition to a society that lives a full life, in which we recognize ourselves as Nature, capable of enjoying its complexity, diversity and unpredictability. To achieve this, an agricultural revolution is essential to places human beings back in Nature, a repositioning achieved through art, as an integral part of life and generator of new universes. CEENTAA seeks to contribute to an agrarian and artistic transformation by creating a space for critical reflection, experimentation and action that encourages the integration of contemporary artistic practices with agricultural practices and Nature.
Thus, it operates in the area of art/culture with the development of programming projects and support for artistic reflection and creation; and in the area of the environment through research, promotion and application of agricultural practices and eating habits that promote biodiversity and the complexity of ecosystems.
The CEENTAA Association aims to reactivate the relationships and dynamics that resulted from the activities of CENTA (Centro de Estudos de Novas Tendências Artísticas) [Centre for the Study of New Artistic Trends], co-founded and directed by Graça Passos. Launched in 1989, CENTA was a professional structure, that supported artistic creation through residency programs, founded to promote Contemporary Art, especially in the areas of Dance and Visual Arts. Its pioneering spirit, at a time when spaces and opportunities for research and experimentation in the creative process were limited, as well as the working conditions available, made CENTA a central hub in the national artistic context. At the same time, the confrontation with the reality of the rural context and the isolation of the territory allowed for the establishment of a dynamic relationship between artists and the population that reinforced local cultural identities. CENTA thus also played a key role in shaping the region’s cultural dynamics, becoming an essential space for contact with artistic practices, a circumstance that it embraced as an integral part of its mission, and began to develop mediation and engagement projects with schools and other associations. The loss of vitality of the dance community, together with the growing institutionalization of CENTA, led to its closure in 2009, leaving behind an energy for transformation that now finds a voice.
